What is supportive care?

“Supportive care is an ‘umbrella’ term for all services, both generalist and specialist, that may be required to support people with cancer and their carers’. It includes self-help and support information psychological support, symptom control, social supports, rehabilitation, spiritual support, palliative care and bereavement care.”

In the context of cancer, supportive care needs include:

  • Physical needs
  • Psychological needs
  • Social needs
  • Information needs
  • Spiritual needs
