Careers in Cancer in the Grampians and Beyond
| Director: Grampians Integrated Cancer Service (GICS) 0.2 – 0.4 EFT Fixed Term, 3 years | ![]() |
A rare opportunity is available to provide strategic and clinical leadership in cancer related issues across the Grampians region of Victoria. The role has a significant change management focus to improve cancer services within this regional and rural area.
Grampians Integrated Cancer Service (GICS) is one of nine integrated cancer services that have been established and funded across Victoria by the Department of Health. Integrated Cancer Services work to improve the experience and outcomes for those affected with cancer, their carers and families by improving access to high quality, integrated patient centered services close to home.
The GICS Director works in conjunction with the GICS Manager, Governance Committee and staff to promote patient centered care and best practice through:
- multidisciplinary meetings across tumour streams
- supportive care screening and referral processes
- consumer engagement
- initiatives to improve care coordination and reduce unwanted variations in care.
The Grampians area is regional and rural with cancer incidence higher and survival rates lower across several tumour streams than Victorian state averages. Oncology services in Ballarat are a mix of public and private, with private outreach to rural Grampians areas. Recently there has been significant investment of capital associated with the development of a Regional Integrated Cancer Centre as part of Ballarat Health Services.
The successful applicant will have an in depth understanding of best practice in cancer care and a demonstrated commitment to evidence based care. They will understand the challenges faced by rural and regional cancer services across Victoria and be able to identify opportunities for service improvement. They will liaise closely with regional stakeholders to promote sustainable solutions to address service gaps, and support greater integration between cancer services within the Grampians region. Excellence in managing stakeholder relationships together with demonstrated clinical leadership is essential.
The City of Ballarat has a thriving population of over 90,000. There is a thriving music and artistic community and most sporting interests are catered for. Education facilities in Ballarat are first class. Incredibly the city is located conveniently less than 1.5 hours from Melbourne CBD and an international airport.
Applicants must have a primary medical qualification fully registrable with the Medical Board of Australia and hold an FRACP/FRACS or equivalent and be able to demonstrate wide academic and clinical experience.
Interested candidates are invited to contact Mr. Ian Campbell – Chair GICS Executive Committee +61 3 5382 0011 or rphillips@listerhouseclinic.com.au for further information.
